On first bikes

You got your driver licence and you think it's time to buy your first motorcycle? Mahdi, my surf guru, can help you with that. It's a nice write up; just a bit too specific to the three particular candidates.

He stripped a long essay on riders solidarity from the original discussion. I'm not sure it will help you pick the right bike but it's worth mentioning. For those who never noticed, riders wave their hand when they see another rider. Just a subtle sign. You extend the index and major fingers and rotate your hand 90 degrees counter clockwise. You don't know the other guy, he doesn't know you. He is a rider and this is enough. Riders are brothers and sisters.

If you are stuck on the side of the road, you could hitch hike but you don't have to. Riders stop when they see another rider who looks stuck. This has interesting consequences when you buy your first bike. Since you don't have bike yet, you are not a true rider. But you are here to buy one, so you are still somewhat part of the extended family. It might be the crappiest bike you've ever seen, the seller is still a rider. You can't tell him to go fuck himself with his overpriced rusty relic of the industrial revolution. You have to politely tell him that this is not what you are looking for. It's harder for the first bike because you don't feel the solidarity yet, you've just heard of it.

Getting a piece of junk as your first bike is a good idea. You will drop it, there is no way around it. But you will also get stuck and when a rider will stop to help you before you finish taking your helmet off, you will stop being a motorcyclist. You will become a rider.
